Second Mate/Education Officer:
This position is for the 2019 sailing season: Contract is for Mid-March through early November. The Second Mate/Education Officer is responsible for leading a navigational watch when voyaging and coordinating on-board education programs and/or managing the deck during daysails.  Medical skills and bosun skills a plus.  All officers on the Kalmar Nyckel work closely with our volunteer crew.  A small portion of each day will involve administrative duties.  STCW preferred.  Send resumes to captainsharon@kalmarnyckel.org by December 31st.

TITLE: Event and Visitor Services Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Executive
SUPERVISOR: Executive Director
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time 

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) seeks a Coordinator for its events and visitor services. Holidays, weekends, and weekday availability is required for a total of 20 hours per week.

The Coordinator will ensure the operation of KNFís visitor services and facility rentals as well as lead logistics for sponsored events such as the Wilmington Pirate Festival.   During the summer months, the Coordinator will oversee operations at Fort Christina Park. 

KNF seeks applicants with strong communication skills and customer focus as well as an ability to work with people from different cultures. Applicants must be responsible, professional self-starters. Background in  event management is  preferred. The ideal candidate should have strong administrative skills  including integration of various technologies.  Personnel management experience a strong plus. 

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise associates
  • Manage visitor services operations, including Fort Christina Park in summer
  • Prepare all material resources, stock brochures, ensure welcoming environment
  • Manage all payment and booking processes , including cash boxes and Point-of-Sale
  • Oversee conditions in park and museum and report on conditions as necessary
  • Manage and supervise facility rentals
  • Process all paperwork and secure all KNF requirements for events
  • Work with client from initial inquiry through the end of the event including tours of facilities
  • Communicate with KNF staff to ensure proper scheduling
  • Lead logistics for KNF sponsored events such as:
  • Secure permits, assess technology needs and implement plan; 
  • Liaise with supporting groups (police, neighbors, parking, sponsors)
  • Communicate with KNF staff and committees planning each event
  • Assist with layout, set up and breakdown of event
  • Collect data and prepare reports on operations

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Strong customer relationship and communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Responsible, professional, and adaptable to changing conditions
  • Works well as part of a team and independently
  • Strong computer skills and technological ability; familiar with Google and Microsoft products, social media, and Point-of-Sale software; ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Compliance with criminal background check

TITLE: Event Assistant 
DEPARTMENT: Executive

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time 

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) seeks an Event Assistant for the Copeland Maritime Center. Holiday, weekend, and afternoon-evening availability is required for a total of 10-20 hours per month. This position will begin in 2019 with some training in 2018.

Under the Event Coordinator, the Event Assistant will oversee all evening and weekend facility rentals at the Copeland Maritime Center. The Assistant will ensure that the facility is clean and prepared for each event. The Assistant is also responsible for setting up and breaking down all KNF equipment. KNF seeks applicants with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and technical proficiency with audio-visual equipment. Applicants must be responsible, professional self-starters. Background in event management is preferred.   Position will begin in 2019.   

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Open and close facility and grounds during events
  • Clean facility as necessary before, during, and after event, including bathrooms
  • Direct set up and break down to prevent damage to museum exhibits
  • Enforce KNF policies and procedures during event
  • Set up all audio-visual equipment, including lighting and projectors
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Weekend, holiday, and evening availability is required; set-up takes place in late afternoons
  • Demonstrates responsibility in management of materials and property
  • Strong customer relationship and communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Adaptable to changing conditions
  • Works well as part of a team and independently
  • Able to set up and break down PA audio systems, run digital projectors
  • Compliance with criminal background check
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds

TITLE:  Weekend & Holiday Visitor Services Associate 
DEPARTMENT: Executive
SUPERVISOR: Office Manager
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time 

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation (KNF) seeks a Visitor Services Associate for the Copeland Maritime Center. Holiday and weekend availability is required for a total of 6 hours per week. This position will begin in December 2018.

The associate will work alongside interpreters to provide information for visitors. KNF seeks applicants with strong communication skills and customer focus as well as an ability to work with people from different cultures. Applicants must be responsible, professional, self-starters, and familiar with computers, projectors, and other technology. Background in customer service and administrative tasks is preferred. Applicants must have Saturday daytime availability.  

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Welcome visitors by greeting them in person or on the phone
  • Answer inquiries related to the shipís schedule, directions to ports, and registration for sails
  • Use KNFís online system to register, refund, and reschedule passengers
  • Handle cash
  • During sails, assist with Kalmar Nyckelís dock lines and gangway as necessary
  • Maintain clean and safe reception area
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed
