Employment at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation:
SHIP POSITION: SECOND MATE/EDUCATION OFFICER The Second Mate/Education Officer is responsible for leading a navigational watch when voyaging and coordinating on-board education programs and/or managing the deck during daysails. Medical skills and bosun skills a plus. All officers on the Kalmar Nyckel work closely with our volunteer crew. A small portion of each day will involve administrative duties. Basic Safety Training preferred. This position is for the 2020 sailing season: Contract is Mid-March through early November. Send resumes to captainsharon@kalmarnyckel.org by January 15th, 2020.
Responsibilities of the Second Mate/Edu Officer:
Daily shipboard task as assigned by the captain
Leads a navigational watch while voyaging to other ports
Coordinates and leads the educational programming on the ship
Leading volunteer deck crew through sail evolutions and furling sail
Responsible for safety equipment and chart corrections
Leads maintenance days and field days with volunteer crew
Admin tasks as required for crew paperwork, and ticket sales
Program and Itinerary of the ship:
The Kalmar Nyckel has a mission of education conducting short education daysails and tours for school field trips during our spring and fall seasons and a short period of time in the summer for summer camp visits. The ship also makes several short trips from Norfolk, VA to New England. The Kalmar Nyckel takes guests sailing on 2-3 hours sails in Delaware ports and other ports up and down the coast, ending with our favorite festival in Chestertown, MD. 2020 is a drydock year for us (about 3 weeks), and this will happen during this contract at a time that is TBD.
