Planned Giving

The 1638 Heritage Fund is made possible by individuals who share a desire to preserve our rich maritime and cultural history, and who care deeply about the embodiment of this tradition—our beloved ship Kalmar Nyckel, the Copeland Maritime Center, and our educational programs.

Planned Giving

A planned gift enables you to make a contribution to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation that has a significant and long-lasting impact. It is a gift given for any amount and for any purpose — operations, capital project, or endowment — and for current or deferred use. Consider a gift through your will, living trust, or retirement plans.

Bequests

The simplest approach is making a gift in your will, also called a "bequest."  Making a bequest is easy to do you can designate a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, a fixed percentage of your entire estate, or leave your residuary estate after providing for your loved ones. A simple charitable bequest can provide very meaningful support for our mission as well as reduce the amount of estate and inheritance taxes paid.

IRA Charitable Rollover

If you are 70 ½ or older, the IRA Charitable Rollover allows you to transfer IRA assets of up to $100,000 to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and exclude the transfer from your taxable income.

Life Insurance Or Retirement Contributions

You can name the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement account by designating a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the account or make the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation a contingent beneficiary.

Charitable Gift Annuities And Remainder Trusts

These planned gifts allow you to contribute to the 1638 Heritage Fund now, while enjoying tax benefits and retaining an income stream for the rest of your life.  An estate planning attorney or financial advisor can advise you on how to best implement these giving approaches and what works optimally for your estate plan.

If you have already provided for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation in your estate, please let us know so we can ensure your wishes are recorded and followed exactly as intended and, if you wish, we may recognize you for your generosity.
